Goniopora, typically referred to as a flowerpot coral, grows hemispherically (ball like) and can have long flowy tentacles or very short (micro) tentacles. It can be distinguished from its relative Alveopora by counting the amount of tentacles around its polyp.
Goniopora corals have 24 tentacles, while Alveopora has 12. The fleshy tentacles can grow and extend several inches away from the skeletal structure of the coral during the day and likes to retract at night.
Keep in mind that Goniopora is known to be very difficult to keep in captivity and is not recommended to the new hobbyist or to newer systems. They like low to moderate lighting and moderate to high flow and do better in older, more stable/matured systems. Of course, you should always maintain proper water parameters by maintaining good calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity levels.

Although Goniopora are mainly photosynthetic, relying on the products of their zooxanthellae, they do require being fed phytoplankton and zooplankton, as well as other products like Coral Feast and Reef Energy or other amino acids and probiotics.
