Dragon’s Breath Macroalgae (scientifically known as Halymenia durvillei)
Dragon's Breath is a popular and visually striking red macroalgae often used in reef aquariums. Here are some key points about it:
Appearance: Dragon’s Breath has frilly, ribbon-like fronds in deep red hues with orange edges1. It resembles flames or dragon tongues, which adds to its allure.
Nutrient Control: This macroalgae serves as a nutrient exporter. It absorbs or feeds on dissolved organic waste, including fish waste, nitrates, and phosphates2.
Placement and Attachment:
To encourage optimal growth, provide ample water movement and appropriate lighting.
For attachment, consider using aquarium veggie clips (plastic ones without metal) to secure it to rocks or other surfaces in your tank1. These clips can be positioned vertically or horizontally, depending on the type of macroalgae you’re attaching.
Some aquarists have successfully attached Dragon’s Breath to rocks using these clips, but it can also be left free-floating if desired.
